Proposed Mine
If Eagle is allowed to continue it will very likely be the first of many mines, the foot in the door for a new and different kind of mining district. Iron mining is our heritage and iron mining has been good for the U.P. and Marquette. Metallic sulfide mining is like nothing we have seen and portends potentially far-reaching change. The process has started. See if you like it so far.
Beyond the potential for accidents and miscalculations, opening a sulfide mine is very similar to opening a toxic waste dump. Unlike the oxide iron ore with which we are all familiar, sulfide ores are reactive. When exposed to air and water a chemical reaction starts that cannot be stopped and its product is often acid mine drainage: sulphuric acid, more familiar to most of us as battery acid. This is not a short-term problem. The ancient Romans had sulfide mines that still leach sulphuric acid.
