A Letter from Downstream
by Daisy May Erlewine
Me and my babies, we're gonna live downstream
From that sulfide mine in the UP
And all that poison will run through our veins
Like it will run through the river on the Yellow Dog Plains
And maybe when I'm older, I'll understand
How a whole lot of money can buy the sense off a man
How a big corporation can come into your life
Find your wishing well and suck every drop dry
And maybe one day, I'll understand why
We were too blind to see or stand up for what's right
And maybe when I'm grown, you can explain to me
Why all of our leaders don't step out and lead
Because me and my babies are gonna live downstream
From that sulfide mine in the UP
And all that poison will run through our veins
Like it will run through the river on the Yellow Dog Plain
Please my good people, please my dear friends
We gotta do everything in our power to protect this land
And maybe when I'm older, I'll get to say
That the heart of the people drove the mine trucks away
Because me and my babies we're gonna live downstream
From that sulfide mine in the UP
And all that poison will run through our veins
Like it will run through the river on the Yellow Dog Plains
