As I am about to move from Boston, back to my home state and Marquette, poised as I am for semi-retirement and chance to build a cabin on my Lost Creek properties (where I have to meet stiff environmental codes), I'm more than disappointed in the actions of MDEQ and the governor. Talk of 6 mines when the testing could cause enough damage, and the possible sale of Rito to Chinese concerns scares the living hell out of me and my future. Having visited China and seen their absolute disregard for the environment gives me nightmares of what the Bush administration has allowed in our country. Whatever reason MDEQ has for granting this permit, it cannot be either tolerated or allowed to happen. Kennecott has a blatant history of mistakes and accidents with this type of mining and from evidence presented, should be chased out of the state, along with MDEQ. Failures now will be too costly, a failed future is at stake. Please, let's not give up the fight on this one! Let us not allow the dollar now to determine the dollar later, simple business at that. Sincerely,

You would think that if Kennecott is in clear violation of mining law, and the MDEQ/DNR denied permits on such grounds, then the state wouldn't worry about lawsuits from Kennecott because the MDEQ/DNR would be doing the right thing by following the law in the first place. They would win in a lawsuit. Now it looks like it's going to be on the shoulders of NWF/Sierra Club and all other "wacko enviro" hehe groups to make the mining laws work and protect the UP. Makes me sick how these government agencies cave so easily. Makes me want to know more about the reasons why they choose not to protect the environment.

Someone remarked to me about the utter idiocy of spending millions to brand our state as "Pure Michigan" and then approve a mining technology that does THIS to water:

Perhaps "Pure Hypocrisy" might be a better slogan?

The DEQ and our governing body have cuddled up to big business without a thought for Michigan's future. I'll have a hard time trusting the state to make ANY responsible decisions in the future. How many mistakes must we make before we gain a little foresight?
Thanks to Save the Wild UP and all the other organizations and individuals who have poured their hearts into this fight. We have our work cut out for us... it's not over yet!
